Assignment 4: analysing a book and an article

Colour words

Colour brings life to the world is around us, but it is subjective and there is one guiding rule. How many colour you can speak at the first time, red, yellow, blue, green, brown, purple, black, white and gray. What’s first comes to your mind when you thinking about colour? What is your favourite colour? What is colour of your car or your dog? Maybe it is the colour of house you are living.

Designer is cross the colour to experiencing their project and choice bits of general advice: be yourself (mostly). Like music, language and food differ from one to colour that is closely related to our daily lives. Every day we can get some information from the colour, like which colour sky is sunshine. We react daily to countless colour-coded messages, have learning from early childhood which colour signal stop or wait. The colour is effect our thinking so the designer need from the offered framework of information from which one can make an informed and appropriate colour choice when designing cross-culturally.

‘Global graphics: Colour can arm you with the right questions to ask. For each country included, the customary significance of colour is detailed and social context, historical information, and aesthetic background are provided.’

As we all knows the sky and sea is blue, the ice is white, the soil is yellow or black and the forest is green. So we can know where is wet or dry, where is cold or hot and where is land or sea when we watch the photo of the earth. For the international colour logo: Coca-Cola red, Kodak yellow, and IBM blue are recognizable everywhere. Here pay attention to the local colour. What colour are used the traditional crafts and houses painted. The colour you need may not be among these, but designers should understand the colour vernacular familiar and trying to reach.

Every single colour in different countries have differ meaning. I think the red is a good example because it is always draws attention to itself. It is meaning war or some terrible things; it is representative warm and hot; it is also can understand happy and so on.

Red word is comes from the old English read. In Sanskrit, the world rudhanic means red or blood. Red in English is associated with the colour of blood, certain flowers and ripe fruits. Fire is also strong connected, as is the sun and sky at sunset. People also said the healthy light-skinned person ‘ruddy’. In the mid-19^th century, red was used to describe revolutionary movements. That is why the most of the colour in the China’s flag red. The colour is tells us the country is from the revolutionary movements. There is a very famous word from the fist China head ‘A single spark can start a prairie fire’. In the west the good red is red letter day- important or significant occasion; red carpet treatment – make some feel special, treat them as if they are a celebrity; red sky in the morning, sailor’s warning, red sky at night, sailor’s delight – pay attention to paint the town red – celebrate, go out partying and so on. But in China red have more means. Red is the basic respect for our culture and colour, it reflects the Chinese people in the spiritual and material pursuits. It symbolizes good luck, happy, and if we contribute to a better marriage, another person called "Matchmaker", festive days to hang red lanterns, red couplets, red lucky character; men and married women to marry will stick to red "happy" word, the lively, boom called the "fire"; describe the bustling, lively place called "Red"; it a symbol of revolution and progress, such as the Communist regime called the first "red power", the first armed called "Red Army", the political demand for progress, business on the hard study called "red and expert", etc.; It also symbolizes a smooth, successful, such as the human condition are well known as the "popular", "smash hit", to be superior trust and like called "Reds" assigned to the profits of a partnership called "dividends", giving bonuses called "bribe" and so on; It also symbolizes beauty, beautiful, like a woman strong makeup for the "red makeup" or "red uniform", the Gaudy woman called "red sleeve, "the face of a woman glamorous as the" roots "and so on.

Colour meaningful in United States and Canada

After I read this book I think if we want to know what colour is the country’s people like. Mostly we can find the answer from the country’s flag design choose the colour. That is quite interesting things.

The different colours in USA and Canada have the meaningful in the secular that is important for the commercial. The colour’s context is everything. If you think that is a wrong idea. While go the shopping centre can you find the pink birthday card for the boy; can you find the red exit sing; can you find the blue fire sing and so on. So colour is a very important role in our life and society. Here have some introduce the colour meaningful in USA and Canada.

1. Red: ‘Meant as a warning or an invitation (and often both).’ Red is a high attention, loud colour and promises excitement. So it is always powerful symbol of vibrancy and life, but it is also mean death and danger. For the women’s dress the red clothes are more easily to attention other’s eyes. The red sport car is also functions in same ways. For the food the Americans more like the red apple. But red is mean special and hot it is use on the other food. In Canada scarlet are the flag colour and the uniform of the royal Canadian Mounted Police.

2. Yellow: The visibility alone trumps good design that is the most visible colour from a distance. Yellow also can seem cheap. Yellow use the cautionary signal in USA. But most of them considered yellow is the happy colour that colour seem to tall us welcome warmth and ripe grains. And most of the American cities the taxis are belong to yellow.

3. Blue: A popular colour use in the companies and organizations. In generally the blue have the true blue, dark blue and while blue. The true looks not exciting so feel a bit cold and stiff but blue indicates quality, value, durability, strength and authority. Dark blue is the officialdoms’ uniform, mailboxes and symbols colour in the U.S. You can find wear the while blue denim everywhere at everyday that is suit for all ages and sexes.

4. Green: ‘Newly a symbol of environmentalism, green has always been linked with forests, crops, and plentiful harvests and in marketing or packaging signals things that are “all nature”.’ But in Americans and Canadians blue is also the money’s colour. In food it is meaning freshness, health, and mint flavour.

5. Black: The first idea in our mind is the death. Black linked the bad news like: morbidity, the void, evil, sin and negation.

6. White: In Americans it means clean, pure, perfect, sanitary and elegant. On the other ways it is also can means cold, empty, boring, antiseptic, unfinished and ghostly. The white always use the paper, clean sheets, a blank canvas, a new painted room-tell us new, fresh and ready to go.

Assignment 3

One again time we were met up to talk about our subjects which is we want to choose for our dissertation. We all had a talk about what we wanting to do and everyone put in their thoughts and helped each other to define in our area.

I found it very helpful for us to better understand our choose and found which one we should do better in the future. I think others people was also quick enjoy it.

It was interesting to hear the pros and cons of each individuals subject after the wiki entry was done. And also interesting to see who was changing there topic and why.

For this assignment I do not want to change my topic because I think research is very important for graphic design. I need it for my every project in my future design life. I think research is the first step for every work and it is quite important. After the group comments I developing my topic and i do a new map for it.

I want develop my graphic design at the card design in the future. I will use the research ways to design the card. I like the card design because I think it is more interesting and less limit in it.

The best design outstrip its before by using new ideas, but use the research to solve the problem that is one way of them but not new. At the same time, through research to solve the problem is worth to do that we can know what is the aimers’ need? I think that is really important for the designer and why need research and design. After the new idea, we should make an emphasis plan for the research project and research programme setting out the wide-ranging of data collection and analysis to be employed and solving how the research the way to dispose of a situation address the specific aims and objectives of study, and whether the research issues are theoretical or policy-oriented. Design research inquires into the process of design in all its fields. It is consequently related to design methods in ordinary or for particular disciplines. In this way we can better understand and to improve the design process. After the collection, collates, analyses and exploits date. We can know is the aimer need but not what is the aimer want. We often mistaken about what they really want. That is why we need the research and design.

History

I find the Design Research Society was found in 1966 in UK. First of all, the first of the design method meeting was conduct in London at 1962, making it the core of common interests in the process to determine whom the new method.

For the purpose of the draft resolution and as the rules embodied in its first statement is to promote 'research and many areas of research to the design process, all’ this meeting to establish a new interdisciplinary field and is a mutual learning community. The draft resolution was promoted the contributing to a one-day series of meeting and quarterly newsletter to members the purpose.

But after a few years, due to resume publication of journals in vein and the same fruitless discussion of internal dispute led to the social objectives of the stranded. I find a story about the research and design history. This is a story of Vonnie lee that is 29^th. He was a author meets at opportunity house that is an agency designed for the rehabilitation of adults with mental retardation and psychiatric disorders. He just talk about very narrow strictures of his life when the author find him and let him to show the people him life. All his talking is about the ‘a description of the bus rote.’ That is quit interesting. So the author asks him why he is like the bus so much. He says:’ if I was a big shot, I’d be on the bus right now.’ After the research the author was explaining his life is: ‘the bus trip-survives the vicissitudes of his life.’ By the research study is benefits the ‘in-depth autobiographical interview methodology’.

Research and design have 5 different tradition of analytic table of content:

Between the theory and research. Research and design like a choices, influenced the aims, the research questions and the styles/tradition of the research.

Biography, phenomenology, grounded theory, ethnography and case study are all of them research have 3 step. First, I think we should use of sociological interpretive approach. Find the key books and make the reference to know what is the definition, origin, variants, procedures, and challenges then use of theory to research questions and individual to be studied. Analyze and rapport issues to make the forms of data (data recording, field issues, and storage) to analysis. Then writing a biography belong the standards of quality and verification. The end case study “turned” into a biography.

How to do a good research? First, choose a qualitative study because of the nature of the research question, like how, why, when and what. Second, select a qualitative study because the topic needs to be explored and develop it. Third, use a qualitative study because of the topic need to present a detailed view. Fourth, select a qualitative in order to study individuals in their natural field. Fifth, choose a qualitative similar because of interest in writing of style, the personal pronoun. Sixth, employ a qualitative study because of extensive data collection in the field and detailed date analysis of information. Seventh, choose a qualitative similar because audiences are receptive to qualitative research. Eighth, the finally, employ a qualitative approach to emphasize the research’s role.

How to phases in design study? First, the research make a general plans to study. Second, some issues are doubtable for the qualitative research. Third, consider from the traditional format of research. After research we show the persons the process of collection data and analyzing them to shape the narrative. ‘We tell a story. We present the study following the traditional approach to scientific research (i.e, problem, question, method, findings).’

Assignment 1

By the fresh week begin that we were finished our summer holiday. This is a long holiday for me, love it and enjoy it..

This wednesday we are start our first lecture for the lever 3. In the first class when the teacher divided the group for us. 8 individuals per group, they are from different systems of students. Last year also has such a group discussion. But they are our own class of students to organize together, so inevitably there will be a discussion of the small size of the problem. This time the teacher to help our group will not only help us to design from a different point of view to discuss issues that will allow us to make new friends. This is a good way for us to study.

For some reasons our first meeting with our group not enough 8 persons. So our meeting was not long like other groups. But our meeting was very happy and quickly. We choose the titles for our interesting. I think the essay is different for me. So i choose the normally title: culture & design, research & design.

ACTIVITY 5A

I studied last semester is the Down’s syndrome, congenital mental retardation or Drown syndrome is autosomal aberration, is the most common chromosomal disorders in children a kind of live births occurred in the rate of about 1/(600~800), mother grow older, the higher the incidence of this disease. 60% of the children died at an early stage in fetal abortion. Drown syndrome includes a series of genetic diseases, of which the most representative of the first 21 pairs of chromosomes of the three-body phenomenon, will lead to, including learning disabilities, mental retardation and disabilities such as a high degree of deformity.

Children at birth that is already evident in a special face, and often presets problems and feeding difficulties addicted. With age growing, their mental retardation became clear during the performance, action, delayed growth and sexual development. About 30% of children with congenital heart disease associated with other malformations. Due to immune dysfunction, susceptibility to various infections, increased incidence of leukemia 10 to 30 times. If survival to adulthood, it often occurs after the age of symptoms of senile dementia. Whether the patient or the patient’s mother, are very unfortunate. For different countries to identify such symptoms for the fetus have different laws. There is this disease, once the fetus was born; it is necessary to conduct a wide range of special care. For these special groups of people to do the design, service to them. In fact, doing this work I have a certain degree of difficulty. The disease has in-depth explanation when I was in high school courses. Unfortunately, for some reasons I do not have knowledge about it. Come here to read some English professional books, but I cannot understand them very well. Therefore, it is inevitable that some misunderstood places.

One: similarly, I will find some pictures of people suffering with Drown syndrome; also find a few normal people’s photos to analysis and comparison from the photographs. Make myself to learn the information found in the pictures as much as possible. So that they can help me in life at the first time read the identification of such groups of people (I think these are very important for me). Of course, I hope in my future design also allows the public more easily and quickly identify them. By this way I can let everyone know what kind of land can be the attitude and approach to care for them and sympathize with them.

Two: finish this work, I would like to bring something that they have learned and understand place. There are a number of my ideas in this area to as much as possible to find people to discuss the matter. Listen to and discuss these matters. They do not know what are Drown syndrome (at least I do not know it before I do this essay) circumstances, put photos to show them. Interviewed about their feelings and to record that they were the clothing and expression. Then tell them this is what got the crowd and got sick of people what the disease sympathy. I think that all persons will be very much sympathy for them, after all, the disease cannot be cured and it is one of the lifelong painful diseases. It is our hearts wide-ranging ideas will be generated and we are discussed and our questions or answers. After some discussion, I think I will forgive a rough target to know how kind they should be designed to do.

For a story with photos of this step, I think for me this program is not necessary. Because in the one step I have found the information they want to be. Here I need to find some of their stories and grow diaries and so on. So that in there own good to know what they really need.

Three: at here, I need to find some sites to watching. First of all, I would like to find some forgive pass through the store, pharmacy and the like places to watching. In these places where I need to observe the environment and facilities and analyze why to do this and what is the purpose. Looking care of these places so special and how do people use them. And from here, it is also to its diameter line and staff to observe and pay attention to their conversation. After the completion of the special services for such groups and to see these people week after how people react them.

Forth: further investigation and study. Preferably in advance of interviews with some staff to prepare a number of related issues. Can go to some special items to buy some of these patients needed to go before the local or the observed areas. Right there, the staffs visit. For example, they will come together to buy things like issues. Second, find more clients to ask some relevant information. Listen about their life, some of the happy, unhappy things and what is their want.

I think after the four-step access to shelter, investigation and research. Yes, I believe I can cover up there have been a new awareness and understanding. Designed my own advertising and facilities can be more close to the requirements of these populations.

Prior to doing everything it had conducted in-depth understanding. This can allow himself to have a full grasp of doing things. I think that is why we do this. Here, of course, not need a layer of the same thing; it is the need to develop and innovation. I believe I have also designed what can be very good.

ACTIVITY 5B

For this essay I need to choose one of my studio brief and make a plan for my graphic third year.I choose the visual thinking-experiment & experiential for shipping forecast. I am very like this project and happy made it. But there were also have many problems in my design.

Following this project required us to design anything just fit for the area. We can do any form for it like the graphic photos, film, model and so on. Just by us. I did a model and the model’s poster for this project. 3D and 2-dimensional, I like three-dimensional design. 3D can make me feel more really. So I choose do a model for the 2C project. But I am not very happy with the result. Sometimes reality and imagination there ware so many different places. On the other side I didn’t do the project a full understanding and preparation was also one of my big mistake.

At here, I want to say some things in my further design if I do the project like that one. Following this semester Jonathan’s first 4 seminars teach us the 4 ways to design: (maybe some ways is not suit for my design but I will think them at the first.)

1.The consumption of design

-Read the books (the culture of design-chapter 4) to find the ways

-Find and select source material (from different discipline who you do not know well)

-Analysis ---taste, influences, possessions and environment

-Note, making and discussion.

2. Experiment

-Read essay “The Rhetoric of the Image” and discuss it with group members

-Select three random images

-From a selection of people from different backgrounds to collect stories.

-Select or create a fourth image to see if you can make people read just one “story” or meaning.

-Use text to create a single reading of the images.

3. Design safari

-Choose one of the activities and observe how people behave, the “rules” and rituals

-Reflect on and discuss your experience

4. Interview

-Choose a topic and contact a small number of interview subjects.

-Conduct a survey of people to find out about their attitudes to your area of design

-Discuss the results with others and write your own notes of your findings.

Obviously, from all the ways for the tutor teach us is the teamwork. This is also telling us teamwork is a very importance way in our further work.

After read the tip point I begin to notice small thing that is can change the whole phase. Here the consumption of design way is like the tip point. First I will to find some shipping forecast pictures. Choose some form that I like it than watching them carefully. Find some interesting places. Thinking why them have this and for what. I will take some notes about the questions. For these questions I will not to go to internet or books to find the answers, I will own one the they should consider these issues and these issues will make their own detailed conjecture and imagination to make a variety of the situations. The best case is that these answers and I guess almost. Such initial plan is a good even complete. Following by large number search information to find a correct answer. For the correct answer and their answer were compared. Take my ideas and correct answers to complement each other. In this step of study, I would have a lot of ideas about this work. I need to carry out all my ideas and record. In my opinion this is a step forward in term of design.

At this time thought the strength of the team. I think I need to do that which the hands of the information to others (of course, there is not necessarily a design-related personnel, from children to the elderly are acceptable. The more different people can give different perspectives more answers) explore together. For example, I want that these hands have been aware of the information and their own ideas and different people to share. I always have different doubts and problems need help, perhaps they are not the best nor the answer is correct, but I am able to solve many problems at the same time I can get a better idea to design my work. At the same time the majority of them to give me the answer is also an objective, multi-perspective. This is something very important point.

Then the same I need to find some especial photos where I will design. The best is not to find many photos, a few photos as long as it can prove to be the region’s photograph on it. The same way as that find some people and to show them the pictures. Before I show them the photos I need one my own idea’s photo (Photoshop or sketch is all ok just make sure people can understand what you draw). I do not need to tell them any information about the photos. Let them tell me a story or an idea about the photographs after them read the pictures. I always can get some fantastic story. After this I should show them the last picture and let them link them tell me the story make the end of the story. Concluded that they have given me the story.

The last, if there is a chance I can go to the area where I will design place to understand the local customs and cultural backgrounds. Conditions are not allowed, and then there are many solutions to solve it. I can find some of those areas where I am a live characteristic of restaurants, shops and so on. At the same time also pay attention to those areas of people’s words and the deeds and habits. Looking for opportunities and people in those areas to talk more to understand them.

After all of this I think I will get a very good idea about my design.

For this seminar we need to interview someone with the questions. I choose the ‘what object do people treasure the most? Why?’

Before I go to ask the question to people. I have already thought some questions but ‘treasure’ is a big question. So I forgot my questions. I decide form different to ask the different questions. Then from my question I decide to ask some older. I believe every older have a lot of fantastic stories in their life and the ‘treasure’ most of time influence their decide.

I have interview 5persons.

First one:

Last Saturday when I went to the Dundee museum and saw a around 30 years men dresses in dark casual clothes sit the chair read the book at the museum door. There was a big windy that everyone want to go to room. Just he read the book on the street. So I want to interview him. I ask him the question. He answer it is the hobby. He very enjoys his hobby. He loves his life. He loves his life, so he loves life in every different thing. He is a worker engaged in the arts. As long as art and what he likes, whether it is modern, classic, man-made or natural that he likes. In comparison, however, he is more of like modern art. In particular he like the modern clothes. Modern clothing pattern design is his favorite. The colorful hand-painted patterns that he was like, in his own spare time on his own to the creation of an often some interesting patterns. He was very kind of life to enjoy. So he also used this approach to life to educate his son. Hope that his son would also be a time to enjoy life people.

This visit his attitude is very friendly.

The second and the third:

I want to get some different answers so last Sunday morning I went to the church opposite the Crawford building. Here is the 10 o'clock every Sunday Drive line Sunday. The fourth and fifth:

The fourth I decide to ask the Chinese. I ask a boy who is a primary school teacher 26 years old. He tells me his parents and wife is the treasure. (I think 90% Chinese men will be given the answer). The other Chinese boy tells me the same answer. Parents raising us and gave us a chance in life. Their selfless love for us so that we grow up healthily. Therefore, regardless of their own lives after the sample is also how to do their utmost to Book of Filial Piety parents. (In China, filial piety is the evaluation of the parents of a person's basic conditions). The wife will be with the husband walk the end of life. This is all my interviewing. From this interviewing I found the local people are very friend and to share their thinking and feeling. But the Chinese think the treasure is a very privacy is not very willing to do so, and I say that their stories. The hearts of many is that they hurt, so I do not want others to reveal their scars. Is usually the time to chat with friends will go to avoid this topic. Of course, I interview this is not very smooth.

Assignment 3

For the activity3 we had to choose one of the activities at the handbook. I have 3 chooses (Bingo Hall, Shopping center and Public library) to watch people going about their business, observing how they behave. Try to find the ‘rules’.

In the final a few classmates and I choose the Bingo Hall to watch people. I think maybe Bingo have a little especial at the city center. Bingo is a higher modern building in the city center. I see there is many old people stand at the Bingo door when I go through there. So I just think there is the elderly in places like the center. Ex: bar…

We have chosen to go to Bingo at Wednesday night. Before I get there I have many problems in my brain. When I entered Bingo, I have some tension and also have a little surprise. I didn’t think there’s such a gorgeous decoration.

I didn’t how to buy the ticket. My classmate tells me I should apple for the membership card. I stay there for a long time to apple the membership card. But the waiters were very nice. And they gave me a member handbook, a membership card and a strong pen (I don’t know how to use it). Then I pay 80p to buy the early ticket.

First of all to go through a smaller game rooms before they can reach the place we want to reach. Where we have to play the game, and game rooms are two kinds of different styles. Here large can accommodate a lot of people. But the tables are very small.

Our students have found these people we can accommodate a table. When I was coming in the game has already begun. I have some unknown error. Students to see the game with that pen point on the figures, I only know how to book and pen use. Laugh.

When the game started looking at the door on the figure. My brain just gets larger. When compared with the high school generation is even more difficult.
